Politics of Thornlin
Thornlin in these days is a prosperous city of about 35,000. The city dwellers are in the main prosperous craftsmen, traders, and shopkeepers, with enough unskilled men and servants to accommodate their modest lifestyles. There is a residual aristocracy with landed estates, but their legal privileges have largely withered away. City politics revolves around three core issues: the competition between craftsmen and traders, attitudes toward foreign powers (the Big Four and the neighboring duchies of Assansun and Chebay), and rivalries between influential families, which at this point may or may not have any traditional noble blood at all, and which include the House of Andrin (with Scheiner as its most prominent member, usually spoken of as a member of the mixed House of Andrin-Fenton; other branches of Andrin’s house exist and wield influence), the House of Saerin (named after a prominent coppersmith who was Foremost in the sixth century IR, and whose family has notable dwarvish blood), and the House of Luteuse (a house formed by a succession of marriages by several landed gentry across the duchy, with an admixture of money from trading guild connections, most recently to the Lenday Guild, which has strong connections with Nebbar and the budding trade in tropical wood from Neldar).
